Global Food Security in Ghana

Monmouth’s Global Food Security Initiative (GFS) was the first of the College’s innovative Triad initiatives, bringing together faculty from three academic disciplines – anthropology, biology and economics, in the case of GFS – to work collaboratively to critically examine a problem of great societal importance and to creatively develop solutions that address the problem. An academic minor in Global Food Security will launch in 2017.

As part of the initiative and minor, a study abroad program is being developed in Accra, Ghana. It will give approximately six students the opportunity to take a class at the University of Ghana, spend a week in a rural village, and take part in research in the social or natural sciences.

For many Monmouth students, the primary obstacle for taking part in such transformative academic and cultural experiences is funding. The Global Food Security program is paying for a majority of the program expenses. Your support will go to support the direct cost for students.

Food security is an issue in Ghana and in Monmouth. The GFS faculty aims to equip students from many majors with the intellectual tools to effectively contribute toward achieving global food security in their lives and in their careers.
