Before there was a Center for Science and Business, there was the Monmouth Coffee Project, an interdisciplinary project that was initially funded by a $4,200 gift to the College.
It is currently run by chemistry professor Brad Sturgeon and students, who can smell and taste the science. Although students are not paid for their work, they are exposed to all aspects of running a small entrepreneurial business and course credit can be earned.
A unique educational experience, the Monmouth Coffee Project currently sells to the campus bookstore, as well as four local businesses. Students can also buy Scots Roast at the P.O.D. in the Center for Science and Business.
If the goal of $5,090 is reached, the money will be used to add a two-pound roaster to College’s nutrition lab, which will allow faculty and students to increase production, add more local clients, and convert the one-pound roaster to a propane-fired burner so it can be used at farmers markets and other outdoor venues.
